Second Teen Struck By Van On Life Support At Children's Hospital: A 13 year old local girl was in critical condition and on life support this morning in a San Diego intensive care unit with brain injuries after she and her friend who was killed were struck by a vehicle Wednesday on HWY 98 here. Diana M Avila of Calexico was listed in very critical conditon in Children's Hospital in San Diego with bleeding in the right temporal lobe of the brain and in the brain stem, Calexico police Sgt Reggie Gomez said. Diana's friend, 13 year old Sheila Flores of Calexico, died about 5:30 am Thursday from injures sustained in the accident. Gomez said an official with the San Diego Medical Examiner's Office told police Sheila likely died from bunt force trauma injuries to her head. However, Gomez said the cause of the death won't be ruled official until an autopsy is completed. Diana and Sheila are thought to have been struck by a van driven by 20 year old Jose Francisco Martinez of San Diego as the girls attempted to cross HWY 98. Gomez said the girls were not in a designated pedestrian crossing area and that the lighting was poor. The accident occured around 8:30 pm. The gilrs who were found lying unconcios in the roadway when Calexica paramedics arrived had to be flown from El Centro Regional Medical Center to Children's Hospital for further treatment. Update: A month after Sheila's death Diana M Avila passed away.

Painfull Days: December 22, 1999 No one knows where you and Diana are at Diana's mom goes looking for you girls She looks everywhere she can think of But there's no sign of you and Diana Then, as she's putting gas at AM PM She witnesses an accident along HWY 98 She goes closer to take a look And hears what terrified her the most, "Two young girls were hit by a van" She tried to get even closer to see who it was But they wouldn't let her get near Or give her any information on the girls Hoping that it hadn't been you and Diana She went back to your house To see if you girls had returned But you girls weren't there yet And no one had heard from you Diana's mom let your mom know About the accident long HWY 98 she said, "I think it's our girls the ones who were hit" Your mom then lost all her senses She started to cry Despretly they went back To the scene of the accident But still they wouldn't tell them anything About the girls who were hit by the van The only thing they could do Was to go to the hospital to identify you Once they were in the hopital The nightmare got even worse It was you girls the one who were hit by the van You had decided Not to cross HWY 98 thourgh the cross walk Instead you would take a short cut But who would have know That the short cut would be even shorter Than what you had imagined? You were hit by a van That was going at high speed There was no chances for you to live You were flown from El Centro All the way to San Diego You were in critical condition And on life support December 23, 1999 It had been a tough night For your family Especially for you and your parents Throughout the night You had to be revived more than 5 times Then around 5:30 am You left us You returned to the stars You were taken by the man upstairs To be a little angel This is not finished yet…I had to take a break from it because it was just so sad for me to write…Someday I'll finish it

Hey lil cuz…I know you're watching over us…You were chosen by god to become the next lil angel…It was very hard to let go of you…Still today I cry cuz you're not here with us…I would've given anything to have you here with us…I would've even risked my own life for yours…I just want you to know that I'll always love you…Today makes 7 months since the day of your accident…I still remember it as if it were yesterday when my mom told me you had passed away…I felt the whole world come down on me…Well prima…Te quiero mucho y nunca te olvidare…I'll see you soon up there with the big man…Muah
