This chat page is designed for ease of use.

The main chat script.

This part of the page is where the text of the chat room's conversation is located. When you first enter a room this will be very small, however it will increase in size vertically as more and more conversational text is entered until it gets to a certain size, then text at the top of the page will be deleted. Conversational chat always scrolls up.

First row of chat input boxes and controls.

The the three text boxes on this row are all linked together. You use the middle one for your main conversational inputs. You may also use the middle box for entering in commands, such as /msg, the meaning of which I'll explain below. The middle box clears itself after you press enter. Type all your main conversation text in the middle box. Any text typed into the first box will preced text typed into the middle box. The first box will not be cleared after you press enter. This is helpful if you wish to have a string of text added to all your main conversation inputs. Note that you cannot use commands in the middle box if you have ANY text typed in the first, including just a space; however, you may include commands in the first box. To demonstrate the benifits of the first box, let's say you wish to include "Joe says~>" before all of your main conversational inputs. To do this you simply type "Joe says~> " in the first box; be sure to include at the very end of what you inputed in the first box. Then type what you wish in the middle box. Say, for example, you (shown here with the nick "Joe2000") type in "hello" into the middle box and then press return. The resulting input into the chat conversation would be

Joe2000: Joe says~> hello

then say you type in the middle box, "hi jane!," the resulting input would be

Joe2000: Joe says~> hi jane!

If you did not type in a space at the end of the first box, this would be the resulting input:

Joe2000: Joe says~>hi jane!

As mentioned earlier, you may also use the first box for commands. Since the first box doesn't clear itself after pressing the return key, you needn't retype in the command all the time. For example, to continuously use the action command, type "/me " into the first box; and again, don't forget the space. Then type in something into the second box, say "says hello to everyone in the room!" The result would be

Joe2000 says hello to everyone in the room!

Then say the next thing you enter is "has to get a drink of coffee, BRB," the result would be

Joe2000 has to get a drink of coffee, BRB

You can also combine the action command with text in the first box. Say you wish all your messages to preced with "Joe says~>> ", then simply type in "/me says~>> " into the first box. Then, when you type something in the middle box and press return, say you type in "hello everybody!", the result would be

Joe2000 says~>> hello everybody!

Then next you enter, "how is everybody today?" The result would be

Joe2000 says~>> how is everybody today?

/me isn't the only command you can use in the first box. You may also wish to use the whisper command. Simply type in "/msg " and the nick of the person you wish to whisper with, and a space, and then enter your message into the middle box and press return. For example, say you wish to whisper to KoolKat, you would type in "/msg KoolKat " into the first box. Then you would type in your message into the middle box. For example, say you wish to wisper "How are you today?," the result would be

Joe2000: (to KoolKat): How are you today?

Then next you wish to say "I've been doing great!," the result would be

Joe2000: (to KoolKat): I've been doing great!

You may also type in action and whisper, as well as any other, commands into the middle box as long as the first box is completely empty. You may have wondered why I didn't simply add a built in space between the first box and the middle one. The answer is that doing so wouldn't have alowed for the entering of commands in the middle box.

Now the last box is similar to the first box in that it adds to what is typed into the middle box. However it adds the text to the end of the text string. Say you wish all your messages to be end with a certain 'signiture,' simply add your 'signiture' to the last box. Say, for example, you wish to end all your messages with ", says Joe". Simply type that text into the last box, and then type something into the middle box, say "I got a new stereo today guys", the result would be

Joe2000: I got a new stereo today guys, says Joe

Then type when typeing something else into the middle box, say "My cat just spilt his milk", the result would be

Joe2000: My cat just spilt his milk, says Joe

Now you may wonder when you would ever use this feature. One possible time would be if a friend was using your user on your WebTV to chat with. In order for the other chatters in the room to distinguish him from you he can add a signiture indicating that that particular message is his. Say your friend's name is James, and he adds his signiture to the last box indicating his name. When chatting, the results would be something like

Joe2000: Joe is out washing his car, says James

Joe2000: I'm from Baldwin Park, California, says James

You can also combine all three boxes. Say you type "/me doesn't say "" into the first box, a message into the middle box, and "," James says it." into the third, a result could be

Joe2000 doesn't say "I'm from Baldwin Park, California," James says it.

And the next time something is typed in the middle box, there will be a similar result

Joe2000 doesn't say "Baldwin Park is in Southern California, in the United States," James says it.

To sum up, text typed into these boxes will be put together to form one text string that will be entered into the chat, in this order:

FIRST BOX + MIDDLE BOX + LAST BOX

The Whisper Button.

The whisper button is the button with a "W" on it next to the last text box. Press this button and you'll get a pop up dialog box that will alow you to whisper with anyone in the room you are in. Simply select the person you wish to whisper to on the left, and type in your message on the right, then press return. To cancel the action, press the back space.

Marcos, or "Pop-ups."

Marcos, or "pop-ups," are a pretyped in string of text. When activating a marco, that string is automatically entered into the chat room. The very last object on the first line has a "P" on it. Press it to select a list of marcos. Select one and press return. A string of text will be entered into the main room. Play around with the various marcos to see what they are in an empty room. If you have any suggestions for more marcos, please send them to me at albert1987@hotmail.com.
